Professor Ian Ganly, MD, PhD, MSc, FRCS (Edin), FRCS (Glas), FRCS-ORL (Edin) received his training in otolaryngology at the University of Glasgow teaching hospitals in Scotland, UK and in head and neck surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer. He has led thyroid surgical missions to St. Petersburg, Russia; Guangzhou, China; Kenya; rural India; and the Chernobyl region of the Ukraine. He was the first fellow of the Advanced Training Council sponsored by the two head and neck societies. He is former Otolaryngologist-in-Chief at the Mount Sinai Hospital stepping down after fulfilling his 10 year appointment. He has an active practice focusing on head and neck oncology with a primary interest in endocrine surgery of the head and neck. He has given over 500 scholarly presentations, has been invited as a visiting professor and surgeon internationally, and has published over 280 articles in the scientific literature. He has been involved in a number of administrative roles in the American Head and Neck Society and is also on the editorial board of a number of high impact journals focusing on head and neck oncology. He has recently been appointed to the National Institute of Health (in Washington DC) task force on the management of thyroid cancer. He is the Director of the University of Toronto Head and Neck Oncology Fellowship, considered to be one of the top such fellowships in North America. He was the program chair and congress chair of the First and Second World Congresses on Thyroid Cancer held in 2009 and 2013 in Toronto. He was the Keynote speaker at the Congress held in Boston in 2017. He has been invited worldwide to deliver keynotes in the management of thyroid malignancies. David Shonka Jr., MD, is a fellowship-trained head and neck endocrine and oncologic surgeon at UVA. He specializes in the surgical treatment of endocrine disorders of the head and neck including thyroid cancer and hyperparathyroidism.
Dr. Shonka grew up in the town of Clifton. He completed his undergraduate, medical and residency training at UVA from 1996 to 2009. He received special training in transoral robotic surgery with use of the da Vinci surgical system. His clinical interests include thyroid cancer, parathyroid surgery, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, salivary gland malignancies and cutaneous malignancies. Dr. Shonka works with endocrinologists, radiation oncologists and medical oncologists at UVA to provide interdisciplinary care for endocrine disorders and malignancies of the head and neck. He offers many state-of-the-art diagnostic tests including head and neck ultrasound and ultrasound-guided needle biopsy in the office setting, providing excellent patient convenience and value. Dr. Shonka routinely performs extremely complex surgeries, often in the setting of prior surgical treatment or radiation, with excellent clinical outcomes.
Dr. Shonka’s research interests include thyroid and parathyroid disorders, quality metrics in head and neck endocrine surgery, oncologic and functional outcomes after transoral robotic surgery, head and neck cancer tumor biomarkers, and head and neck imaging modalities. Professor Neil Tolley is an internationally respected consultant ENT (head and neck) surgeon based in London. He has earned worldwide acclaim for his pioneering work with head & neck robotic surgery in the UK and was the first surgeon in the UK to use the Da Vinci Robot for head & neck cancer, obstructive sleep apnoea and thyroidectomy. Additionally, he was the first surgeon in the world to perform robotic parathyroid surgery. Professor Neil Tolley treats a wide range of ENT conditions and has a special interest in surgery of the thyroid and parathyroid glands.
Professor Tolley completed his initial medical training in Cardiff in 1982 and his MD in nasal physiology in 1988. He then went on to complete specialist training at the Royal National Throat, Nose & Ear Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital amongst others. Professor Tolley has undertaken a number of international fellowships in San Diego, California, Cape Town and Perth and Sydney, Australia. The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh appointed him a fellow in 1988 and the following year he was also appointed a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was accredited as an ENT surgeon in 1992. In 1994, he joined St Mary’s and Ealing Hospitals as a consultant ENT surgeon and has since been appointed lead clinician of ENT, head and neck surgery, audiology and oral surgery.
In 2010, Professor Tolley made pioneering use of telerobotic equipment to perform surgery to remove an overactive parathyroid gland and its use in selected patients to avoid scarring and lenghty hospital stays is now widely practised. His work in the field has earned him international renown and as such he is regularly invited to contribute to training programmes and conferences. Professor Tolley has twice presented his work at the World Congress of Robotic Surgery held in Orlando in 2010 and in Miami in 2011. He also visited Hamburg to assist in the first robotic thyroidectomy in Germany in 2012. Additionally, he developed the first integrated simulation training programme for ENT healthcare providers in England, which has gone on to be shared and used in the US, Sweden, Australia and Egypt.
Professor Tolley imparts his knowledge in a number of educational roles for medical trainees. He is a programme and simulation course director for ENT training in North Thames and has supervised a number of MSc, MD and PhD students in his role as Professor at Imperial College, London. Dr. Dana Hartl is an otolaryngology and head and neck surgeon in the Department of Head and Neck Oncology at Gustave Roussy.
At Gustave Roussy since 2002, in addition to her activities as an oncological surgeon for tumors of the upper aerodigestive tract, she is in charge of the thyroid surgery unit at Gustave Roussy.
Dana Hartl holds a Ph.D. in Science from the University of Paris III, with an Habilitation to Supervise Research from the University of Paris 5, and is involved in research projects in particular on thyroid gland cancers and robotic surgery. She is the author of more than 120 English-language publications referenced in international peer-reviewed journals. She organizes teaching in thyroid surgery at Gustave Roussy with live surgery demonstrations, and online teaching with the School of Cancer Sciences at Gustave Roussy.
Bilingual, French-English, Dr. Hartl is a member of numerous French and international learned societies, including the American Head and Neck Society, the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, the International Society of Endocrine Surgeons and the European Thyroid Association.
In addition to her care, research and teaching activities, she is an expert in Otorhinolaryngology and surgery of the face and neck at the Paris Court of Appeal.

Dr. Naveed Ahmed, MD, is a Staff Physician in the Digestive Disease Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. He brings more than twenty-five years of experience in providing high quality care to patients.
Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr. Ahmed held several roles at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS, US, including Staff Surgeon and Consultant in General Surgery, Trauma & Critical Care Surgery and Endocrine & Hepatobiliary Surgery. Before that, he served at Cleveland Clinic’s Huron Hospital in East Cleveland, Ohio, US, as Co-Director then Director of Surgical Intensive Care where he helped establish the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. He also served as Director, Division of Trauma Services, Chief, Division of General Surgery and Vice-Chair, Department of Surgery.
Dr. Ahmed earned his medical degree at Allama Iqbal Medical Collage of Punjab University in Lahore, Pakistan. He followed with his Surgical Residency at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Hospital and Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center in New York, New York, US, from 1993 to 1998. He also completed his Fellowship in Surgical Intensive Care there in 1997.
In 2000, he completed his Surgical Residency at Cleveland Clinic’s Huron Hospital, where he continued to work as a Staff Surgeon and on the teaching staff until 2009.
Dr. Ahmed is a Diplomate with the American Board of General Surgery and the American Board of Surgical Intensive Care and completed the American Society of Transplant Surgeons Fellowship Program with Cleveland Clinic in 2009 for Kidney and Liver Transplant Surgery.
Dr. Ahmed has been mentoring and teaching medical students and surgical, ENT and anesthesia residents since 2000 and has received multiple teaching accolades and awards. He has participated in multiple studies to improve quality of care for patients, as well as quality of life and training of medical students and surgeons. He has published numerous studies, presented multiple journals and lectured globally.
Dr. Ahmed now lives in Abu Dhabi with his wife and two children.
